About Streaming

What is streaming?

Streaming is a technology used to deliver content—usually audio and video, but increasingly other kinds as well—to computers and mobile devices over the internet. Streaming transmits data as a continuous flow, which allows the recipients to begin to watch or listen almost immediately. Streaming is the quickest way to access internet-based content, but it’s not the only way. Progressive download is another option that was used for years before streaming was possible.

Where do I go to watch streaming?

There are many different websites where you can enjoy streaming, here is just a few:

Twitch

Mixer

YouTube

Does streaming cost money? Can I watch streams without paying for anything?

The short answer is yes to both questions. Consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One allow you to stream directly from the console itself. PC streaming requires a bit of a monetary investment, including but not limited to:

•Higher-end processing and video software

•Monitors (most streamers have more than one)

•Capture card (to be able to stream your console games from the PC)

•Microphone/Headset

You can watch a live stream at no charge to you on sites like YouTube, Mixer, and Twitch. Most broadcasters have very friendly and welcoming environments, so don’t be shy and introduce yourself! And if you feel you’d like to support a broadcaster monetarily you are free to do so.

Can I make streaming my job?

Yes, you can! There are thousands of streamers around the world who make a career from streaming! However, it can take years for someone to be able to make a living off of streaming it can require more hours a week than a regular job to keep your stream successful and desirable to your community while also drawing in more people every stream.

Be aware that if streaming is your career goal, it is a long-term goal and it will require even more time, effort, and money for premium equipment than just getting yourself a community built. It will also require constant work and remembering that first and foremost a streamer is an entertainer. You need to continually keep yourself entertaining and fresh to subsist off streaming.

What goes into being a successful streamer?

There are many facets to being successful at streaming, regardless of what platform or platforms you use. You need to have the proper equipment like a capable computer and/or console, a microphone, possibly a webcam, and of course games or creative content to stream. However, no matter how nice your gear is, without a following and a community built around your name your stream will not go anywhere. You need to be able to provide your supporters with a unique product based around how you play or what you make and you as a person so people enjoy their time with you, and each other.

It can take a lot of time, effort, networking, making a theme for yourself, and building friendships to create a friendly and positive community, but don’t worry! The members of the WSA can help you learn how you go about all these things.
